Deliverables

Art Direction
Design

I produced this alternative book cover for my Typography course. I physically designed the title out of Kool-Aid powder and mixed liquid.

Inspiration

I took inspiration from the original cover's dark tones to match the dark and serious nature of Layton's experience. However, I wanted to focus on iconic imagery associated with the People's Temple and Jonestown, so I played around with some Kool-Aid.

Process

Doing this without a stencil was not the smartest technique However, I got to get my hands dirty to try to adhere to my inspiration font: Tangier.

The title before and after editing it in Photoshop. I had a tough time deciding whether to keep the glare in the Kool-Aid liquid in the final image or eliminate it in post, and I'm glad I kept it! Also deciding how much to edit the words I already made out of the powder was a slippery slope.

Final Book Cover

Takeaway
This project was a turning point in my career, inspiring me to pursue an additional field of study. It also challenged my perception, showing me that I could be something I hadn’t considered before—a designer!
